THE number of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases in the Philippines climbed to more than 78,000 as the Department of Health (DOH) reported Saturday, July 25, over 2,000 coronavirus infections.

The DOH said in its July 25 cases bulletin that 2,019 additional Covid-19 cases were reported, bringing the total count to 78,412.

Majority of the new cases came from the National Capital Region (NCR) with 1,115, while Cebu reported 479, Cavite (90), Rizal (52), and Davao del Sur (41).

The health department also said that 20 more patients had succumbed to the disease.

This means that there are now a total of 1,897 fatalities due to Covid-19.

The new deaths were from Central Visayas (10 or 50 percent), NCR (six or 30 percent), Calabarzon (two or 10 percent), Central Luzon (one or five percent), and Zamboanga Peninsula (one or five percent).

The DOH said 13 (65 percent) of these deaths happened in July, four (20 percent) in June, two (10 percent) in April, and one (five percent) in March.

As to the number of those who have recovered from Covid-19, the DOH reported 1,278 new recoveries. This brought the total count of survivors to 25,752.

The DOH said majority of the cases in the country, or at 89.89 percent, have mild symptoms, and only 9.8 percent are asymptomatic.

Worldwide, Covid-19 has affected 15,296,926 people and 628,903 had died, said the World Health Organization. (HDT/LMY/SunStar Philippines)
