2 killed, 3 hurt in Batangas landslide

MANILA (Updated) -- Two persons were killed and three others were wounded Wednesday morning in a rain-induced landslide that struck a resort San Juan, Batangas.

San Juan police chief Jomar Flaviano identified the fatalities as Maria Luisa Santos and Christopher Cruz.

The victims were sleeping in a container van cottage situated near a cliff in Kota Keluarga Resort in Barangay Laiya when tons of soil and boulders eroded around 2:30 a.m.

Three others were brought to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Authorities said heavy rains in the area brought by Tropical Depression Ramil could have triggered the landslide.

Ramil was last spotted at 85 kilometers east-southeast of Coron, Palawan packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) with gustiness of up to 60 kph.

The weather disturbance brought moderate to heavy rains over Calabarzon areas of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon since Tuesday.
