4 killed in Soccsksargen flashfloods, landslides

KORONADAL CITY –- Four senior citizens were killed in flashfloods and landslides that hit Soccsksargen region on Wednesday and Thursday.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-Soccsksargen Assistant Director Jerome Barranco identified the fatalities as Nonoy Ga, 74; his wife Monita Ga, 71; and Diron Tamarang, 70; all from Tupi, South Cotabato. They were buried alive in a landslide that followed after an overnight heavy downpour.

Anita Ochova, 63, of Glan, Sarangani province, also died during the calamity.

Five other civilians were also injured, while more than 4,000 families have been affected, according to the report from the OCD.

At least 10 towns, one city and 43 villages have been submerged by floods triggered by heavy rains Tuesday night, the report added.

The OCD said at least 40 houses, five flood-control dikes and nine bridges were also damaged by rampaging flood waters.

The local government units are still assessing the situation for the possibility of putting the affected areas under state of calamity. (PNA)
