AirAsia offers free baggage allowance, meals for soldiers

AIRASIA Philippines vows to provide free baggage allowance and in-flight meals and snacks to all Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) troops on a mission to any of its flights.

This is following the viral post on Facebook of a certain netizen, Inday Rakel, who narrated how passengers of an AirAsia flight helped three soldiers, two of whom were headed to war-torn Marawi City and another for Cotabato, with their excess baggage. Rakel, at that time, was bound to Davao City.

“We recognize the incredible sacrifices of our military heroes and the Bayanihan spirit among Filipinos,” AirAsia Philippines CEO Captain Dexter Comendador said in a photo posted on the airline's Facebook page last Wednesday night, July 19.

Comendador added that the airline will extend free baggage allowance of up to 40 kilograms including in-flight meals and snacks to all militaries on a “peace-keeping mission to any of AirAsia flights upon presentation to their official ID and mission order.”

The commitment, which is believed to be the first of its kind to be offered by a local commercial airline to the Philippine army, is effective immediately.

In an online interview, Rakel told SunStar Davao that her intention to post the incident was to call the intention of the airline.

“Sobrang happy ako, (I am very happy) even my family, reading the official statement of the airline, they responded positively with our call,” she said.
