MANILA -- President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III on Wednesday admitted that he personally appealed to both chambers of Congress to continue with the conduct of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

“I appealed to the members of the ruling coalition of both chambers to support us in our drive to continue with what was already been scheduled by the pertinent law and that is the conduct of barangay and SK elections in October of this year,” he said in a press briefing.

With a vote 22-15, the House Committee on Suffrage has junked all the bills seeking for the suspension of the elections.

Aquino said he explained before his allies in Congress the importance of renewal of mandate in governance thus the new officials should be elected on October 25.

The President earlier proposed to push through with the polls and synchronized it the next national elections in 2013.

A bill will then be passed to support the cutting short of term of those who will win in the forthcoming elections. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
