Body found not that of seaman from Cordova

THE shipping agency where the Cebuano seaman confirmed dead by his family belongs yesterday clarified that one of the two bodies that were recovered was not his.

In a report over TV 5 Cebu, Arnold Javier, vice president for shipping of the Magsaysay Maritime Corp., said the second body is not that of Jerome Dinoy, third officer of Bulk Jupiter that capsized off Vietnam last Jan. 2.

Last Sunday, representatives of the shipping agency went to Vietnam and provided the hospital where the cadavers were brought the dental records and the fingerprints of all the officers and crew aboard the capsized ship.

After the DNA matching, Javier said it was learned that the second body belongs to Renner Karl Abogadie, 29, the chief mate of the ship.

Abogadie is a native of Baybay, Leyte but currently residing in Rajah Townhomes in Mandaue City.

Last Monday, Dinoy’s parents told Sun.Star Cebu that their son was among those who died in the incident, quoting a report from a Vietnamese news agency.

The Department of Foreign Affairs, in a report, also named Dinoy as one of the fatalities, along with the ship captain, Ronel Alcueza Andrin of Quezon Province.

The cargo ship with 19 all-Filipino crew members reportedly left Kuantan, Malaysia last Dec. 30 carrying 46,400 tons of bauxite to China when it sank in Vietnam.

With the new development, Joydie, Dinoy’s mother, said she is hoping that her son manage to survive.

“We’re happy and confused at the same time. But the agency told us to get updates only from them, being the ones who sent the seamen to Vietnam,” she said.

Joydie said she is hopeful that they will get an answer soon on whether her son managed to survive to clear things out.

“Malaumon mi nga ma-confirm na dayon kay nagsagol nalang gyod ni among gibati,” she said.

Javier, for his part, said that search and rescue operations within the area where Bulk Jupiter sank is ongoing and that they have directed some of their ships transiting near the area to search for any remains of the vessel.
