COMMISSIONER Christian Robert Lim has been designated as officer-in-charge of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in lieu of Comelec chairman Juan Andres Bautista who officially stepped down on Monday.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said Lim, the body's most senior commissioner, was unanimously voted by his peers during an en banc session on Tuesday, October 24.

Former President Benigno Aquino III appointed Lim on April 4, 2011, a year the first automated national elections.

Lim's term will end on February 2, 2018.

Lim, a lawyer, graduated with honors in 1998 from the Ateneo de Manila University College of Law. The same year he took the bar and placed 16th.

Bautista officially stepped down from his post on Monday after President Rodrigo Duterte accepted his resignation "effective immediately."

The House committee on justice declared moot and academic the impeachment complaint against Bautista on Tuesday, October 24, after his resignation.

The case against Bautista stemmed from the complaint filed by former Negros Oriental Representative Jacinto Paras and lawyers Ferdinand Topacio and Manuelito Luna for betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the constitution. (SunStar Philippines)
