Cobra boys stamp class in 'Tatluhan' chessfest

MISAMIS Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) players, comprising Cobra Energy Drink team, amassed a total of 12 match points to rule the Handog Pasalamat ni Governor Bambi Emano Chess Team Tournament concluded Wednesday at DCENT Center, IFI compound in Barangay Bulua, Cagayan de Oro.

For their feat, the Cobra boys trio Jason Nabatlao, Emmanuel Acierto and Romeo Canino pocketed the P10,000 top purse plus trophy and medals.

Stalag 69 of team manager Oliver Damunsong and Laudato Si Chess Team shared second and third places with similar 11 match points each to secure P5,000 and P3,000, respectively, also with medals.

“No pooling of prizes kini nga event so, swerte kadtong nag-tie nga dako og tiebreak points,” said arbiter Lorenzo "Jun" Cuizon.

At fourth and fifth spots with identical 10 match points are the Alvin Calingin Warriors and Malaybalay City, followed by sixth-placer Gingoog City Chess Club with 9 points and King’s Indian Travels and Tour that led eight other 8-pointers to occupy 7-15 places.

Individual board medallists were Johnnel Balquin of CDO 1 (7/7 on board 1), Renan Cantilado of CDO 2 (6/7 on board 2) and Emmanuel Acierto of Team Cobra (6/7 on board 3).

They got P1,000 each in the two-day tourney initiated by Fr. Vic Arellano of Explore MisOr Cooperative Chess Club.

Next to unfold is the first ever Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro Inter-School Chess Team Tournament on June 18 to 19 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Gaisano Mall, in the city.
