Davao eyes to establish another night market

THE Davao City Ancillary Services Unit (ASU) said it is eyeing to establish another night market at the Sta. Ana Pier.

ASU is a team created by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to manage and supervise the Roxas Night Market including the safety, operations, regulations, and the implementation of sanitation in the area.

ASU officer-in-charge Rhodelio Poliquit, during the I-Speak media forum at the City Hall of Davao on Thursday, August 31, said the creation of a new night market in the city can invite more tourists and boost business opportunities for food vendors.

Poliquit said there is already an ordinance allowing the City Government to establish night markets along Ilustre Street, Bonifacio Street, and Bangoy Street aside from the existing Roxas night market.

However, he said it was not implemented as the traffic situation on these streets will be greatly affected once night markets will be established in the area.

"So we need to create another ordinance that will allow us to open a night market at Sta. Ana pier. It is best to put it there as the place is secluded from the busy streets of the city," Poliquit said.

He added that it is also best to put the night market at the pier as tourists and local travelers converge there from their island trips.

ASU, Poliquit said, hopes that the city mayor will give a positive feedback on the proposed ordinance that will be delivered to the City Council anytime soon.
