DCWD to finish 2 water wells by yearend

THE Davao City Water District (DCWD) targets to complete the two water wells by the end of this year that could address the water woes of 10,900 households in the Cabantian area.

Lawyer Bernardo Delima Jr., DCWD spokesperson, said they have proposed for the immediate operation of the Molave Production Well which was commissioned last September 7, 2016.

The well is owned by Alsons and the water district made it operational.

Delima said the well is now providing water to 300 households in Molave Cabantian. The area is no longer getting water from the Cabantian main line which now supplies water to other areas.

DCWD is still waiting for the response of the Emily Homes production well to allow them to operate and distribute water to adjacent areas.

The existing three production wells in Cabantian has a design flow of 2,670 galloon per minute (GPM) but the actual flow is only at 1,254 GPM with a 1,416 GPM variance which could only serve 5,800 households. The current flow is not enough to supply all households in the area.

They have already finished two exploratory drillings in Indangan. The drillings showed that each well could potentially yield at least 5,000 cubic meters a day. The two wells could help add to the water supply being produced by three existing wells.

For the meantime, DCWD sought the help of other stakeholders for water rationing activities to be able to serve communities affected by the water shortage. The activities are being done by the Davao Fire Volunteer Fire Brigade and Fil-Chinese Fire Brigade. They also intend to lease 10 delivery trucks to augment the fleet.

In the first quarter of 2016, Delima said DCWD had sufficient water supply to cater to its customers and their only problem then was the quality. However, water supply was affected when the dry season came in.

Up until now, the supply has not yet recovered from the dry season last year.

“When El Niño started, the designed capacity by dropped half,” he said.
