District jail probing inmate’s death

THE Metro Bacolod District Jail (MBDJ) in Barangay Handumanan is conducting a thorough investigation on the death of its inmate.

The MBDJ probe will determine if there was foul play in the death of Othoniel Labaro, who died Friday reportedly after being mauled inside the facility.

Senior Inspector Richard Servano, head of MBDJ-Handumanan, said over Aksyon Radyo Saturday that they are still awaiting the autopsy result on Labaro’s remains.

Servano said he could not yet confirm if Labaro was mauled by his fellow detainees.

Labaro’s wife Rosinie sought assistance of Police Station 10 Friday after she found out that her husband was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital and eventually died.

Police Station 10 personnel led by Senior Inspector Ritchie Gohee conducted an investigation at the MBDJ-Male Dorm Annex and the jail personnel informed them that Labaro suffered from cardiac arrest.

But when Police Station 10 investigators checked Labaro’s body at CLMMRH, they found that he had hematomas in his chest and ribs.

Labaro was arrested on October 9 at Barangay Felisa for estafa. Police also recovered from his possession two plastic sachets of shabu. He was endorsed to the BJMP-Handumanan facility Thursday afternoon.

Labaro’s wife said she believes that her husband was mauled by his fellow inmates, and their family wants justice for his death.
