Distrito proposes creation of plastic recycling facility

John Paul V. Pepito

BACOLOD City Councilor Caesar Distrito has requested the Bureau of Soils and Water Management of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through Senator Cynthia Villar, to establish a plastic recycling factory in the city.

Distrito said Tuesday, June 14, that he discussed the proposal with the senator during her visit in Bacolod City last week.

He said the DENR has a program that Bacolod can avail for recycling of plastics.

“It has been observed that the present dumpsite of Bacolod contains huge volume of non-biodegradable materials such as plastics. If we have enough garbage of plastics, we can convert these into a plastic chairs for our students in various schools,” Distrito said.

He cited that most homes and establishments have plastics and the non-implementation of waste segregation contributes to the worsening situation of the dumpsite.

“One of the solutions in getting rid of these plastics is the establishment of a plastic recycling factory that will treat the same and convert them to reusable materials,” Distrito said.

He said the creation of a plastic recycling facility is necessary at this time to supplement the current solutions being done by the concerned city departments in terms of solid waste management and rehabilitation of the dumpsite.
