DOJ uncertain of Sebastian's attendance on House probe

THERE is no word yet from inmate Jaybee Sebastian's doctor if he will be allowed to attend Monday's congressional inquiry on proliferation of drugs inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP).

In a phone interview with Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Erickson Balmes, he said the doctor of Sebastian has not yet advised the DOJ if Sebastian can already be discharged from the hospital.

It can be recalled that the top Bilibid inmate was rushed to the Muntinlupa Medical Center after being wounded in the riot that occurred in NBP's building 14 last September 28.

The rumble, involving eight inmates, led to the death of convicted drug lord Tony Co.

Other inmates involved namely Clarence Dongail, Tomas Doniña, Edgar Cinco and Ruben Tiu were transferred to the headquarters of the Criminal Detention and Investigation Group (CIDG) in Quezon City.

According to Balmes, the DOJ only relies on the medical bulletin issued by the hospital.

He said if the doctor of Sebastian will allow him to be discharged Monday morning, then he will attend the hearing.

"We only rely on the medical bulletin. Any changes sa medical condition madadala po natin siya sa congress hearing," Balmes said.

Sebastian is a potential witness on the drug proliferation probe being conducted by the House Committee on Justice.

He was accused of compelling other inmates to sell illegal drugs for the then Justice Secretary Leila de Lima's senatorial bid. (Sunnex)
