PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte revealed Friday that he received an early birthday gift, a Rolex watch in gold steel, from "someone".

He mentioned the gift during his speech at the 31st Biennial Convention of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. in Pasay City.

Duterte, however, said he is planning to sell the watch since the one who gave it to him refused to take the gift back.

"My birthday is coming up. Do not give me the gifts. Somebody gave me Rolex watch gold in advance. I returned it. He does not want to accept it. Well, I'll sell it again, [with] a discount," Duterte said.

The Chief Executive is turning 72 on March 28.

Duterte said he refused to accept expensive gifts because it is contrary from his anti-corruption principles.

"Why should I be [accepting] Rolex? Who would believe if I talk [about] corruption if I wear Rolex. Do you think I can afford a Rolex? That’s why I am also complaining about my salary," he said.

Last Thursday, Duterte said his wish for his birthday celebration is that God will give him time and strength to address the country’s problems. (SunStar Philippines)
