SEVERAL households were flooded in Barangays Paknaan and Casuntingan, Mandaue City after the Butuanon River overflowed yesterday dawn.

A house was also damaged in Sitio Riverside in Barangay Pagsabungan after a mango tree fell on it, according to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (CDRRM) Office.

CDRRM Officer Felix Suico Jr. said no one was reported injured during the rains brought by tropical depression Agaton.

In Paknaan, Suico said around 200 households were affected by the flood that struck Zones Ahos, Sili, Talong past 5 a.m.

The houses are in the city’s 6.5-hectare relocation site.

Acting Mayor Carlo Fortuna said CDRRM personnel and some barangay officials told the families to evacuate after water entered their houses.

However, Fortuna said the families opted to stay.

City Social Welfare and Services Officer Jessie Perez said they served hot meals to the affected families.

The flood immediately subsided when the rain stopped, Suico said.

In Casuntingan, around 15 families living along the riverbank in Sitio Lub-ang were moved to higher ground after the Butuanon River overflowed.

“Earlier at past 5 a.m., the Butuanon River overflowed its banks and we had to evacuate some residents living along it in Barangay Casuntingan. They were provided with hot meals by our social welfare personnel. They have now returned to their homes after the water subsided,” said Fortuna.

He said the families were evacuated at 6 a. m., but they returned to their homes two hours later.

The CDRRM Office lowered the alert level from red to blue in the afternoon, which means its personnel were still on-call.
