Iloilo ups digital tourism, code marker project

MAYOR Jed Patrick Mabilog is set to implement the innovative Digital Tourism Project initiated by Smart Telecommunications and new media startup InnoPub Media, in partnership with the Department of Tourism, city and province of Iloilo, and the private sector.

He said he is the custodian of all properties of the City Government and, definitely, will not issue a cease or desist order (CDO) against the implementation of the Smart project QR.

The City Council earlier approved the authority to sign a contract between Mabilog and Smart Telecom for the QR project. However, in last week's regular session, Councilor Plaridel Nava questioned the contract for having no confirmation with the council. She asked Mabilog to issue a CDO against Smart Telecommunication.

The code marker project, which means Quick Response, is a mobile approach using wireless transmission technology to deliver Iloilo tourism and provide heritage information quickly.

The Smart digital project will be providing technology for the already installed nine close circuit television cameras (CCTV) operating in three areas in the city.

Smart is also paying the city with P18,000 per month rental for office space for the equipment.

Mabilog said Iloilo is now considered a technology city to deliver Iloilo tourism and provide heritage information.

Initially, these landmarks with QR code markers are installed in the Iloilo City Gallery at the City Hall, Plaza Libertad, Molo Church, Casa Rizaliana and the Camina Balay nga Bato. More markers will be gradually put up in other tourist attractions.

The QR codes, e-guide and online map projects will start with Iloilo City to spread out to the rest of the province, including Guimaras.

Smart will start an e-book with information not only of hotels, events, churches and festivals and even tour guides. (Lydia C. Pendon)
