AFTER dabbling in various arts and crafts, baking, writing, dancing and other skills, wards of the Baguio City Jail ladies dormitory will turn into thespians by holding a three-night stage play entitled “Anatomy of an Octopus Woman.”

The play which tackles the plight of women deprived of liberty – their struggles, failures and victories – will premiere on June 10 and will run until June 12. Curtain call is at 6 p.m.

Jail warden Senior Inspector April Rose Ayangwa said the public is invited to witness the play with tickets priced at P200 for general admission and P150 for senior citizens, persons with disability and students available at the city jail.

Twenty-five lady inmates will essay the various roles in the play which is a result of the recently concluded theater arts workshop conducted among the interested jailbirds by freelance artist Angelo Aurelio who volunteered to help in the city jail’s reformatory program.

The theater arts workshop is the latest in the string of skills development and livelihood programs ventured into by the ladies dorm under Ayangwa’s stewardship.

Just recently, the group published their first printed newsletter which contained articles on the jail’s activities and programs and literary works written by the inmates themselves.

It was an offshoot of the journalism seminars conducted by the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club (BCBC) led by president Jane Cadalig, former president Ramon Dacawi and newshen and Alternative Learning System practitioner Nonnette Bennett.

A second journalism seminar is scheduled next week for another batch of inmates who expressed interest in newswriting.

Ayangwa said their wards are also presently engaged in the “Sayaw Kontra Droga” campaign.

Apart from this, the lady inmates keep busy year-round with baking and arts and crafts like cross stitching, rhinestone art, bag-making and others which turned into income-generating ventures for them through the help of various service providers and benefactors.

Their bakery and arts and craft products are available for sale at their display area in front of the city jail. (PR)
