CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Pampanga Press Club (PPC) on Saturday started the first of its Open University Lecture Series for campus writers and journalists, as well as school paper advisers at the Benigno Aquino Hall of the Capitol.

PPC chairman Chris Navarro said the lecture series will run till August 14, alternating venues with San Miguel Corporation and Aquino Hall.

He said that the objective of the lecture series is to hone the skills of aspiring journalists in various disciplines of journalism.

Veteran writer Peter Alagos, who delivered a lecture on news and feature writing, added that the lecture series aims to reach out to hundreds of students all over Pampanga.

“Our objective is to train at least 800 students from the province, including their campus paper advisers. It is actually a revival of what we did about three years ago,” Alagos told Sun.Star Pampanga.

Prior to the lecture proper, renowned columnist and editorial consultant Bong Lacson presented the project overview, while famed Sun.Star Pampanga columnist Ram Mercado welcomed the 200 participants. Education Supervisor 1 for English Secondary William Bacani also delivered his message for the students.

Other resource persons in the lecture series included Navarro, who spoke about photojournalism; Lacson, who shared insights on editorial and column writing; and Sun.Star Pampanga columnist Noel Tulabut, who delivered a lecture on newspaper design.

The next part of the series will be on July 31 at the SMC Complex. (Jovi T. De Leon)
