ML Canduman debuts with a bang in Thirsty

Jose Hortelano, Balamban, Cebu

THE latest addition to the vaunted M. Lhuillier-Canduman football team is off to a perfect and won its first ever title in the Thirsty Football Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

ML-Canduman’s P6 squad blanked San Roque FC, 3-0, in the finals to win its first title in the first tournament it joined, something its senior P8, P10 and Boys 12 squads failed to do in their first attempt.

Canduman also blanked Bright Minds, 5-0, in the semifinal round, while San Roque ousted Bright Academy, 2-1.

ML Canduman’s predecessor, the Carmen Boys, went on to become one of the best teams in the country and most of its players saw action for the national team.

Led by coach Jun Santillan, the Canduman boys only started playing football in May last year.

“They just tagged along with their older brothers until they decided to start training with the team,” Santillan said in Cebuano after receiving their trophy yesterday.

Santillan said the team practices twice a week at 6 a.m., and their drills focus on ball control and basic skills.

Their practice seemed to have paid off as the team won all their matches without surrendering a single goal including their rout over San Roque.

Adrian Bitoon, who was named the MVP, had two goals, while Christian Carizua had the other one in the finals.

The other members of the team are John Christopher Pineda, John Gener Rafols, Luke Colina, Clint Andrew Larides and Bright Tatoy.
