PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Friday ordered the deployment of more Filipino peacekeepers to Haiti to help the country recover from the devastation brought about by a strong earthquake.

Arroyo, during the 19th anniversary of the Philippine National Police (PNP), also ordered the awarding of medals to police officers who were part of the peacekeeping force to Haiti.

She said she is thankful that most members of the Philippine contingent in Haiti are safe while helping in the search and rescue operations.

“Our peacekeepers in Haiti are there in the middle of the scene. Our police, we are thankful that they are safe from harm and they are currently helping out in the search and rescue operations. They really need to have medals. I also order them to send more peacekeepers to Haiti," she said.

The death toll in Haiti has climbed to 170,000 and its government has stopped the search for possible survivors to concentrate on rehabilitation efforts despite instances of rescued survivors from the rubbles. (JMR/Sunnex)
