No more Sundays for poll registration

VIVENCIO TABASA

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) will stop its Sunday registration because of low turnout, especially in the provinces.

Sunday registration was aimed at accommodating registrants who are busy at work on weekdays.

But Comelec will also have to suspend weekday registration, too, so the poll body can focus on the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

Comelec said there might be an SK election next year. SK registration may start in October this year up to February next year.

Unless Congress abolishes the SK, registration of youths will start this year and an SK election will be held next year, said Cebu Election Supervisor Lionel Marco

Castillano.

“What was (temporarily) suspended was only the SK registration but the law creating SK is still there, “said Castillano.

Provinces

Castillano said the Sunday registration is still under study. He said their records showed a low registration turnout in the provinces during Sundays.

The same record showed that only the cities had high registrant turnouts on Sundays.

“Maybe next quarter mobalik na ta sa Monday to Saturday registration,” said Castillano.

Family day

Castillano said the suggestion to return to a weekday registration stemmed from the fact that Sunday is a family day.

Castillano said he already discussed this with Comelec Commissioner Christian Robert Lee and Teofisto Elnas Jr., in-charge of Election and Barangay Affairs Department.

From May 6 to June 15, 61,054 voters registered.

Of the total number, 53,758 voters registered during weekdays and 7,296 registered on Sundays.
