Notorious Sayyaf member falls

JOINT police and military operatives arrested a notorious member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in a follow-up operation in the hinterlands of Basilan, an official said Tuesday.

Zamboanga City Police Director Angelito Casimiro identified the arrested bandit as Abdullah Indanan, alias Alkobar, who avoided arrest in a raid three days ago in Zamboanga City.

Casimiro said Indanan was arrested in a joint follow-up operation around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday in the village of Paniongan, Lantawan, Basilan.

Indanan was the primary target of a joint police and military raid at an ASG safe house on Saturday in Sitio Gapuh in the village of Talabaan, Zamboanga City. He eluded arrest, though, as he was not around when the troops raided his safe house. His cohort, Salam Arula, 41, was nabbed.

The raiding team confiscated several bomb-making components during the raid.

Casimiro said Indanan has standing warrants for eight counts of kidnapping and serious illegal detention for his alleged involvement in the June 11, 2001 raid at the Golden Harvest Plantation in the village of Tairan, Lantawan, Basilan.

The ASG seized 15 plantation workers during the raid. Three of the workers were killed.
