AFTER Margarita Ochoa's gold medal finish for Team Philippines in newaza (ground technique) women's-45 kg. Sunday, her ju jitsu teammate Annie Ramirez followed it up with another gold in newaza women's -55 kg. final Monday evening in the ongoing 5th Asian Beach Games at the Bien Dong Park in Danang, Vietnam.

Ramirez outplayed Siramold Deepudsa of Thailand, 10-0, in their championship match to snatch her second straight Asian Beach Games gold having won the newaza women's -60 kg title in Phuket, Thailand in 2014.

The 25-year-old Naga City native Ramirez, in an Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Asian Beach Games website report, said, "I was aiming for gold when I came here," adding that there were not as many weight categories in Phuket when she first won the gold.

"I feel I have defended my title," the Academia John Baylon-Clube de Ju-Jitsu Filipinas mainstay added. She used to be judo a player but shifted to ju jitsu five years ago under Baylon.

She was cheered by delegates of the Philippine contingent led by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioners Charles Raymond Maxey and Celia Kiram.

In the semifinals, Ramirez overwhelmed Lebanon's Lea Farhat who gave up when the former was leading, 99-0. This came on the heels of the Filipino's 6-0 quarterfinal win over Angelina Filippova of Turkmenistan.

Ramirez, however, bowed to Jordan's Rana Hatem Sharif Qubba, 2-4, in newaza women's open weight quarterfinal Tuesday.

Ochoa, for her part, dominated Suwanan Boonsorn of Thailand, 99-4, in their titular showdown. Ochoa crushed Turkmenistan's Dinara Jumadurdyyeva, 99-0, in semis.

Meanwhile, three-time Olympian Marestella Torres Sunang salvaged the women's long jump bronze at the Son Thuy Beach Tuesday.

She leapt to a distance of 6.10 meters in her fifth attempt.

Vietnam entries Thao Bui Thi Thu (6.32m) and Mai Nguyen Thi (6.11) took the silver and bronze, respectively.

Philippines has two golds, one silver, and 10 bronzes as of Tuesday.
