Samal resort owners told to cooperate for Ironman

DAVAO City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio appealed to resort owners at the Island Garden City of Samal to support the Alveo Ironman 70.3 Triathlon on March 25, 2018, and sacrifice a little because of the road closures on that day, particularly the section of the highway in Sasa port where most Samal resort ferries emanate from.

It was reported that several resort owners were requesting exemption from the stoppage of passenger traffic from Sasa as it is a Sunday, their peak day.

"We would like to request for their commitment and support to this event, since it was the approved route. It will be just for 12 hours, from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m., that's it. After the event the visitors will go to Samal, so what they lost in 12 hours will be regained in the next week because there is no work, and the children will be on vacation since it is already Holy Week," she said in an interview after the Datu Bago awards.

The Sasa Wharf is among the areas that will be affected by the road closure during the race.

Based on previous reports, Davao City Transportation and Traffic Management Office said it had consulted and asked for the consideration of stakeholders who will be affected in the closure of the roads.

On the day of the race, the stretch from intersection of J.P Laurel Avenue and R. Castillo Street, Davao City (Alcantara) towards north leading up to Robinson's Mall Tagum will be closed from 3 a.m. to 12:30 pm, and the southbound lane going toward Davao City from 3 a.m. to 10:30 am.

Abude also said that the northbound lane (going towards Lanang) of J.P. Laurel Avenue from Corner F. Torres Street up to corner of R. Castillo (Alcantara) will be closed from 3 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

He added that the Carlos P. Garcia Highway or Diversion Road will remain open and vehicles can still use the Buhangin flyover towards the city center.

He said the route from J.P. Laurel Avenue to Alcantara will be closed for 12 hours.

He said that they will put up street signs for the advisory on road closure and at the same time give out leaflets for the same purpose. (KVC)
