GOVERNMENT security forces have stumbled on a newly abandoned camp of the New People's Army (NPA) in the hinterlands of Zamboanga del Sur, as they intensified law enforcement operations.

Captain Maria Rowena Muyuela, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer, said the camp was found Sunday morning in Barangay Cabaloran, Midsalip town.

Midsalip, which has 33 barangays, is a fourth-class municipality with a population of 31,467 as of 2010.

Muyuela said troops from the Army's 53rd Infantry Battalion led by Lieutenant Colonel Alvin Luzon found the camp, which can accommodate around 100 persons.

The rebels pulled out of the camp three days before it was discovered, she said. (Bong Garcia)
