UV Green Lancers win in a comeback, 80-74

THE University of Visayas Green Lancers won in a comeback against the University of Cebu Webmasters, 80-74, in Cesafi basketball season 16, on Sunday, August 14, at the New Cebu Coliseum in Cebu City.

It was a neck to neck battle since the start of the game with the series of lead changes, until the Webmasters got their rhythm in the 3rd Quarter extending the lead to twelve, 53-41.

But the Green Lancers fought with a three pointer from Josue Segumpan, and an easy lay in by Bassier Sackor, cutting down the lead to seven 46-53 at the end of third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, both teams continue their offensive and defensive plays, but Webmasters' Mark Olmilla got fouled out with 3:00 left in the game, allowing easy inside shots for the Green Lancers cutting the lead to just five 60-65 Webmasters.

With 2:14 left in the game, Green Lancers Head Coach Gary Cortes was given a technical foul for a resentment to a call.

Webmasters' Garciano Puerto, however, was not able to convert the two free throws. Puerto also got fouled out with 2:12 left in the game.


In the last two minutes, the Green Lancers took advantage of the small line-up of the Webmasters running plays thru Sackor causing the latter team to play tighter defense on the inside giving Tristan Albina a clear look at the rim draining a 3 pointer from the corner with 1:16 left in the game cutting the lead to two 65-63.

Gileant Delator tried to answer back with a quick two but was unable to convert.

With 44 seconds left in the game, the Green Lancers with the possession, Albina scored a cold-blooded three-pointer to take the lead, 66-65 Webmasters.

The Webmasters pushed for a quick response but was unable to convert.

UV Green Lancers went for an inside play that gave Sackor an easy lay in to extend their lead to three with 9 seconds left in the game, 68-65.

Webmasters' Filvenson Culangco, however, drained a clutch three to tie the game 68-68 to force an overtime.

In the overtime the Green Lancers took advantage of the undermanned Webmasters, with two key players fouled out of the game, by getting inside the paint through Bassier Sackor, taking the lead, 73-72 in the last two minutes of overtime.

Peter Codilla tried to respond with three pointer try but missed.

With 43 seconds left in the overtime, Tristan Albina drained a clutch three-pointer, his sixth of the game, to put the lead up to four, but was quickly answered by Delator with an easy lay up. 76-74.

The Green Lancers then went on the same inside play thru Bassier Sackor to extend the lead to four, 78-74, with only 23 second left in the game.

The Webmasters tried to answer with a quick three point shot but missed that was gathered by Segumpan.

Webmasters went for the intentional foul with six seconds left in the game, putting Segumpan on the line who converted two free throws, extending the lead to six, 80-74.

The Webmasters tried for a long shot, but still unable to convert, losing the game by six. Final score. 80-74

Albina went on a shooting display draining six three pointers to lead the Green Lancers with 19 points, followed by Sackor with 18, and Segumpan with 11 to give their team the come from behind win. They now have 2-0 (win-loss) record.

The Webmasters, Joven Tagudin led the team with 24, followed by Dustin Dacalos with 13, Puerto and Delator with 8 respectively.
