CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga -- The first day of the campaign period for local candidates in Central Luzon on Friday, March 29, was generally peaceful, according to the police.

Brigadier General Joel Napoleon Coronel, Police Regional Office (PRO)-Central Luzon director, said that provincial and city police offices in the region reported that no untoward incidents happened in their areas of responsibility.

"I am glad to note that here in Region 3 (Central Luzon) no single report relative to the campaign of our local candidates was received by the authorities,” said Coronel.

“Our Philippine National Police (PNP)-Commission on Elections (Comelec) checkpoint operations are very much in effect and we continuously implement our security preparations to ensure that the duration of the campaign and election period will be smooth sailing. We aim for a zero incident this mid-term elections," the PRO-Central Luzon director added.

Coronel said he has directed police directors and chiefs to monitor the daily activities of local candidates.

He said that all police units in the region will continue to conduct checkpoints until the end of the campaign period to ensure that no lawless elements will harass local candidates.

The election period started on January 13, 2019 and will end on June 12, 2019.
