SAN SIMON -- After six years of construction, the newly-renovated Nuestra Señora del Pilar Parish Church was finally unveiled to Simonians and parishioners from other communities on Wednesday, June 5.

Archdiocese of San Fernando Archbishop Emeritus Paciano Aniceto and Archbishop Florentino Lavarias led the blessing of the upgraded church altar before it was formally unveiled to the public.

Former parish priest, Rev. Fr. Homer Policarpio, who initiated and led the renovation activities, said the construction started in 2013 and only lasted six years due to the collaborative efforts of the community.

"This was made possible because of the cooperation of our parishioners, the Simonian community and even the Simonian OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) who each made significant shares in the construction of our church," Policarpio said.

He said he initiated the renovation of the church, particularly its upgrading, since the area is flood-prone, causing celebration of masses to be moved during times of flooding.

"Although I am designated in San Fernando now, I am happy that we were able to finish this project and give a more decent and safe space for prayer and meditation to our parishioners here in San Simon now," he said.

Newly-installed Nuestra Señora del Pilar parish priest Rev. Fr. Enrique Luzung, meanwhile, enjoined all parishioners to be united in faith and prayer as they move forward as a faithful community.

"The renovation of our church may have ended, but our mission as Catholic faithful have only started and we hope to have the same unity and belief as we spread the Good News," he said.
