DENGUE cases recorded in Eastern Visayas since January 2020 have already reached 4,309, the Department of Health (DOH) reported.

But this year’s number of cases is "73 percent lower" as compared to the number of cases recorded in the same period last year, which was 16,238, the regional health department said in a statement Monday, August 10, 2020.

The region also recorded nine deaths or a case fatality rate of 0.21 percent.

Leyte has the most reported dengue cases numbering to 2,194 (50.9 percent), followed by Southern Leyte with 592 (13.7 percent).

Samar has 536 cases (12.4 percent); Biliran, 416 (9.6 percent); Eastern Samar, 298 (6.9 percent); and Northern Samar, 281 (6.5 percent).

No new death was recorded in July this year, the DOH-Eastern Visayas said.

Health officials urged the public to observe precautionary measures and practice the 4S strategies against dengue, which include search and destroy, seek early consultation, self-protection and saying yes to fogging activities when there is a clustering of cases. (SunStar Philippines)

WHERE’S THE WATER? Water is sparse at the Jaclupan wellfield in Talisay City in this photo provided by the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) on Friday, April 26, 2024. Completed in 1998, MCWD’s Jaclupan facility, officially known as the Mananga Phase I Project, catches, impounds and pumps out around 30,000 cubic meters of water per day under normal circumstances. However, on Friday, MCWD spokesperson Minerva Gerodias said the facility’s daily production had plummeted to 8,000 cubic meters per day, or just about a quarter of its normal capacity, as Cebu grapples with the effects of the drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to persist until the end of May. The facility supplies water to consumers in Talisay City and Cebu City. /
