TWO unarmed members of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) Active Auxiliaries were shot and killed by still unidentified gunmen in the vicinity of Barangay Happy Valley, San Isidro, Northern Samar Saturday, August 21, 2021.

Authorities identified the victims as Lito Dauba, 39, and Arcito Reyes, 46.

The two Cafgu members were traveling in civilian clothes onboard their motorcycles to report for duty when they were “intercepted and mercilessly executed,” according to the Philippine Army’s 43rd Infantry Battalion (IB).

The victims were shot at close range using high-powered firearms, it added.

Lieutenant Colonel Manuel Degay, 43rd IB commander, accused the New People’s Army of being behind the “senseless killing.”

“As 43IB re-assures the people of San Isidro and Calbayog City of their security and safety, we condole with the families and loved ones of the victims,” the military official said in a statement.

The two Cafgu members were supposed to augment the community support program team who were doing social works along Barangay Happy Valley.

As of Sunday, August 22, no rebel group has come forward to own the attack. (SunStar Philippines)
