TWO modified Danish seine fishing boats, locally known as “hulbot-hulbot” or “tari-tari,” were apprehended separately during seaborne patrol operations last week off Zamboanga Sibugay province.

The apprehensions were made by joint Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) and personnel of the Coast Guard Sub-Station in Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur.

BFAR said in a statement Wednesday, May 24, that one of the two fishing vessels with six crewmen was apprehended in the waters off Josefina village, Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur.

The other fishing vessel manned by two crewmen was intercepted off Kagay village, Malangas, Zamboanga Sibugay province.

The BFAR said that administrative cases will be filed against the owners of the two modified Danish seine fishing boats wherein they will be ordered to pay fine of up to P2 million for violation of the Philippine fishery laws.

The used of modified Danish seine fishing boats has been totally banned in Philippine waters by the amended Philippine Fishery Code and Fishery Administrative Order 246-1 because of the destructive nature of its fishing operation.

It employs the use of a tom weight and scarelines that are heavy in nature and are dragged at the sea bottom surface destroying marine habitats such as seagrass beds and coral reefs in the process. (SunStar Zamboanga)
