TWO people, including a child, were injured while a classroom was partially damaged in an explosion at a school in Zamboanga del Norte, the police said Friday, June 14.

Police Major Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said the incident happened around 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Ganase village, Liloy town, Zamboanga del Norte.

Galvez said injured by a rifle grenade explosion were Desiderio Acain, 54, a public school teacher, and John Michael Baunillo, 12, a Grade 6 student.

She added that prior to the incident, Clark Simbajon, 15, a Grade 7 student of Ganase Elementary School, found the rifle grenade at the abandoned house of a retired soldier while gathering scrap materials on June 10.

She said Simbajon’s younger brother, Jemar, 12, brought the rifle grenade to school and it exploded when Jemar’s classmates, Rhanie Erro, 12, and Racky Arnaiz, 12, both Grade 6 students, played with it.

The police officer said the explosion caused a minor damage on the classroom of Maybelie Quizel while Acain and Baunillo were injured.

The victims were rushed to the Liloy Integrated Health District Hospital for treatment. (SunStar Philippines)
