Remains of 2 trapped miners recovered

AUTHORITIES have retrieved the remains of two coal miners trapped in a tunnel that collapsed in Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay, the police said.

Senior Inspector Xyronne Padre Caronan, police chief of Imelda, said the remains of Richard Atayde, 38 and Wilfredo Fuentes, 47 were recovered around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Caronan said the two were trapped when the tunnel collapsed around 4:30 p.m. Thursday after it was filled with water following a flash flood spawned by continuous downpour.

The coal mine site is located at Purok 1 in Gandiangan village, Imelda.

Caronan said the remains of the two were turned over to their respective families.

He earlier said the two were already advised by fellow miners to get out of the tunnel but they ignored it due to unfinished work. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
