THE Department of Agriculture-Regional Soils Laboratory (DA-RSL) marked the observance of the Soils Conservation Month with a tree planting activity.

The tree planting activity was held on June 25, 2021 at the agency’s research station in La Paz village, Zamboanga City.

During the activity, canella cinnamon trees were planted with the support of the DA-Integrated Laboratories Division (ILD) and La Paz Research Station.

DA-RSL chief Maria Gemma Genaldo said that the celebration of the Soil Conservation Month is observed every June and spearheaded by the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM).

Genaldo said that through tree planting, the soil increases its capability to absorb and retain water, which in return supplies the nutrients needed for the plants and food crops to grow.

“We appeal to all to learn the importance of soil conservation management as it is the very essence in sustaining our food production. Trees also help improve soil quality, as they do save our environment,” Genaldo said.

She added that the tree planting activity was also timely since June 25 is Philippine Arbor Day.

This year's Soil Conservation Month is anchored on the theme “Conserving soil together: A key to land restoration and recovery.” (SunStar Zamboanga)
