Student killed, 2 hurt in highway collision

A STUDENT died while two others, including an infant, were wounded in a head-on collision along the national highway of Zamboanga del Sur, the police said Saturday, August 3.

Police Major Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said the incident happened at 11:45 a.m. Friday in Monte Alegre village, Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur.

Galvez identified the fatality as Jericho Arsua, 16, a Grade 9 student, who was rushed but failed to reach the hospital alive.

Injured were Lorgen Me Jutba, 24 and Lordkian Vinz Castro, two, all resident of Purok 3 in Balintawak village, Aurora.

Galvez said Arsua was driving motorcycle with Jutba and Castro as his back riders when bumped by a pick-up vehicle of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) of Zamboanga City driven by Edwin Calumpong, 54.

She said investigation further showed that the pick-up vehicle of the CSWDO bumped the motorcycle after Calumpong overtook on another motorcycle while traveling from Cagayan de Oro to Zamboanga City.

She added Calumpong and his five companions aboard the pick-up vehicle were unscathed. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
