FIVE houses, two motorboats and a madrasa were destroyed after a twister hit Tuesday, November 9, 2021, in an island village east of Zamboanga City.

The incident happened in Pasilmanta villages, one of the four villages in Sacol Island, 1.5 nautical miles east of this city, as Zamboanga City experienced heavy rains spawned by the shear line, the tail-end of the frontal system affecting Mindanao and some other parts of the country.

Myrna Dapii, teacher-in-charge of the Manicahan National High School-Pasilmanta Annex, said the incident happened around 1:48 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, just after the distribution of modules to parents.

“Luckily, it happened after the distribution (of modules). No casualties were reported,” Dapii said.

The madrasa that was damaged is being used by the Manicahan National High School-Pasilmanta Annex.

Masser Absarani, Pasilmanta village chief, said the displaced families temporarily sought shelter with relatives living nearby.

Ma. Socorro Rojas, City Social Welfare and Development Office chief, said they have provided food assistance Thursday, November 10, to families affected by the twister.

Rojas said assessment and validation are underway to determine how much cash assistance will be given to the displaced families. (SunStar Zamboanga)
