THE driver of the Calbayog City treasurer was killed by unidentified gunmen in an ambush around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, police said.

City treasurer Federico Resente’s wife, Annie, was also hurt. She was brought to Calbayog City Sanitarium for treatment.

Initial investigation showed that the victims onboard a Mitsubishi vehicle were about to leave the sidewalk fish stalls in the village of Matobato when they were ambushed. The city treasurer was not in the vehicle.

The police launched a manhunt operation against the gunmen. Officials said they are eyeing politics as one of the motives behind the ambush.

Thursday's ambush is the third shooting incident in Calbayog City, Samar this year.

On May 15, Justiniano Belleza, chairman of Carayman Village and president of Association of Barangay Captains in the city, was shot dead in front of the Calbayog Legislative Hall.

On June 10, another incident in the village of Carayman left three dead after a cockfight. (Gerwin Babon/Sunnex)
