THREE choreographers who have left their mark on the MassKara Festival were honored Saturday night in the first MassKara Choreographers’ Night.

They are Segundo Jesus Cabalcar, Ulyses Valerio, and Donna Porter who was represented by her daughter, Darlene. They were given the “Distinguished Choreographer” award for their contributions to the festival since it started in 1980.

Porter, choreographer of the Lopues’ group in the late 80s, defined the look of the MassKara dancer. She dressed her dancers in extravagant tight-fitting costumes and remarkable headdress, tanga, and short-heeled shoes.

Cabalcar holds the record having 23 championship in the 40 editions of MassKara Festival. He also helped create the look of the dancer.

Valerio witnessed and participated in the very first MassKara in 1980. Until the recent festival, Valerio continued to choreograph.

The choreographers received their medals and certificates from Mayor Evelio Leonardia and wife Elsa, Congressman Greg Gasataya and Councilors Israel Salanga and Simple Distrito.

A 15-feet tall giant Christmas tree that is decorated with masks was also switched on in the lighting ceremony led by Leonardia and his wife, Elsa.

The event was attended by choreographers, past and present. (PR)
