THE city government of Bacolod is now planning to regulate the individuals who are selling furniture items along Lopez-Jaena Street in Barangay 27 as it is causing traffic in the area.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said Monday, March 20, that it was determined that the property adjacent to the furniture shops along Lopez-Jaena Street is owned by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Benitez inspected the furniture shops in Barangay 27 over the weekend after traffic congestion was reported in the area due to road repairs by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Aside from the road repair, the mayor said the furniture shops were already occupying the road .

He said the occupants promised to remove their furniture items once the water meter installed beside the road is removed and it will be passable for the motorists.

"I will coordinate with the DOJ to transfer the use of that property to the city government for us to be able to dispose of it properly," he added.

The mayor noted that the area, which is two hectares, will be part of the housing program of the city government.

"We can create the ground floor as the furniture display area, and the second floor will be their homes," Benitez said.

He said the furniture shop owners can continue their business in the area, but it needs to be developed by the city to showcase their furniture items and, at the same time, address the traffic congestion.*
