Negros Occidental faces difficulties in controlling Covid-19 spread

Teresa D. Ellera

THE Provincial Government of Negros Occidental is currently encountering difficulties in controlling the spread of Covid-19 cases after another day of triple-digit cases this week.

Provincial Incident Management Team (PIMT) head Dr. Zeaphard Caelian said of the 605 quarantine facilities in Negros Occidental, 541 were fully occupied.

Caelian said the current quarantine classification for the province was also another reason why they were finding it hard to control the spread of the virus.

The PIMT head said the provincial government had tried to ask for suggestions and guidance from the National Inter-Agency Task Force (NIATF) and it has also appealed for Negros Occidental to be placed under a strict quarantine classification.

The NIATF had not approved their requests.

Caelian said Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson is planning to add more quarantine facilities in the province to accommodate those arriving from outside Negros Occidental.

Caelian also added he will leave the decision to Lacson and Provincial Administrator lawyer Rayfrando Diaz if they would again ask for a travel moratorium to free up the province's quarantine facilities and control localized transmissions.

As of May 5, 2021, there were 2,565 active Covid-19 cases in Negros Occidental. Only the towns of Candoni and Don Salvador Benedicto managed to keep their cases in single-digit.
