Bicycle use urged in La Trinidad

FOLLOWING the executive order of La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda implementing car-free day, the Municipal Council passed a resolution on Tuesday encouraging officials, employees and stakeholders to use bicycle as alternative mode of transportation.

Councilor Guiller Galwan said the use of bicycles is a sustainable means of transportation and a solution to environmental and health problems at the same time promoting a clean and healthy lifestyle.

“We are only encouraging constituents of the municipality as much as possible they use bicycle as alternative transportation.”

Galwan said a Bike Lane Zone ordinance approved last year is now preparing for a full implementation aiming to designate bike lane zones along major thoroughfares of the municipality.

Galwan said the municipality continues to be plagued with increasing air pollution and related health problems caused by the presence of toxic emission of motorized vehicles wherein bicycle is an environmentally sustainable means of transportation stated in the resolution.

Salda meanwhile urged citizens to observe the designated “carless” and walk, use public transport and alternative non-motorized transport every Thursday of the first week of each month.

The car-free day applies to all privately-owned and operated vehicles and motorcycles intending to enter, park, or traverse through the premise of the municipal building of the Valley starting 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. that include the entrance to municipal premises and the parking areas of the municipal building, the gymnasium and the La Trinidad Municipal Police Station.

While exempted from the coverage are government and private vehicles used by Persons with Disabilities and Senior Citizens.
