Public consultation for centralized piggery sought

TUBA, Benguet -- A public consultation is eyed before the construction of a centralized piggery farm for Baguio City and Tuba, Benguet.

Mayor Clarita Sal-ongan said Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, Tuba department heads and the Department of Agriculture (DA) met earlier to discuss matters concerning piggery.

This includes P10 million which was already earmarked by DA for the construction of a centralized piggery farm for hog raisers amidst ban on hog raising within urbanized cities.

Magalong called the attention of the Tuba chief executive for a joint venture with the town as a counterpart to find one hectare for the piggery farm.

“It is a good proposal, as of now I cannot get or see the impact, is it good, what we want is to have consultation with the people,” said the mayor.

Sal-ongan also cited the need for a written document with the approval from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) the lot in the town is for livestock.

A lot in Nangalisan in Tuba, Benguet is being eyed to house hundreds of pigs, however this has yet to undergo validation.

Site inspection is set this week.

In a previous visit by officials from DENR on June 2019 in the city, reports disclosed the main culprit in polluting waterways covering Baguio and neighboring Benguet towns include backyard hog raising.

High fecal coliform level was found along Kennon Road where piggeries operate.

Polluted rivers also include Balili River which covers Baguio, La Trinidad and Sablan and Bued River which covered by Baguio, Tuba and Itogon in Benguet.
