THE Cebu City Government has partnered with the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) to offer a robotics course for teachers.

Described by Cebu City Councilor Joy Augustus Young, head of Local School Board in Cebu City, as an “ambitious program,” the project will initially expose 140 teachers to the robotics course.

Young said the training may inspire teachers to pursue masters in robotics.

“We want every school to have a robotics program,” he said at the 2018 Transformation Summit organized by the Cebu IT BPM.Organization (CIB.O) last Wednesday.

Robotics is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering and science that includes mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and others.

According to Young, they will start learning the basics of robotics to incorporate it in the elementary and high school levels.

“We will focus on the programming aspect,” he said, adding that this program may take a few years. “We want this to take off. Robotics is the future and of course, we want to be in that future.”

Dave Overton, chief executive officer of Symph and co-founder of TechTalks. ph, said it is about time Cebu picks a sub-industry to focus on that would bring out Cebuanos’ innate creativity in today’s disruptive age. He thinks Cebu can become a robotics center.

Young assured industry leaders of the City Government’s support to grow this high value industry.

He said the Cebu City Government has partnered with CIB.O to mount the Career Caravan for BPOs, which reached out to 10,000 senior high school students, of which 8,500 are from public schools. (KOC/With CNU Intern Jeany C. Abit)
