Broadway Youth Cebu to do Les Miserables School Edition

Tiffany L. Neri

A RARE gem in the local theatre community, Broadway Youth Cebu (BYC) launches its their second summer workshop announcing that this year’s culminating grand production for BYC’s Summer Musical Theatre Workshop 2019 will be the school edition of—drum roll please— “Les Miserables!”

The production will be performed by students and—with over 50 participants, 15 local artistic mentors, and masterclasses with professionals from all over the world—the makings of the production looks like it will be even bigger and better (if that’s even possible) than the company’s production of “Miss Saigon School Edition” back in 2018.

Broadway Youth Cebu is the brainchild of Cebuano international director and theatre professor Allan Nazareno and locally renowned university theatre program director Rudy Aviles. The theatre company was created to be one that provided the Cebuano youth with training and performance opportunities in musical theatre. Three tracks are currently being offered—the Performance Track for those who are interested in performing onstage; the Production Track, for those who are interested in developing their skills in technical theatre design and directing; and the Children’s Track for pre-teens.

According to BYC, the participants of the three tracks will work with a team of theatre teachers, specialists, and other talented students to explore the distinct challenges of musical theatre. They will be spending a total of four months working on songs, characterizations, vocal work, and choreography—culminating with the full production of “Les Miserables School Edition” that will take place on Aug. 9, 10, 11 at the Rudolph Rahmann Cultural Centre, USC South Campus.

Talk about big dreams and opportunities for the talented youth of Cebu!
