THE Cebu City Council is requesting the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7 to install reflective road markings in the mountain barangays in the city to improve visibility and the safety of the commuters.

Cebu City Councilor Eugenio Gabuya Jr., sponsor of the resolution, observed that some drivers passing through mountain barangays can hardly see the lines on the road or signs about upcoming hazards.

Some drivers tend to panic, especially at night or during the rainy season when signs and lines are not that visible, said Gabuya.

“Roads are slick with oil during rainy season, which means vehicles will have less traction when driving,” said Gabuya.

In August, the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) warned motorists to be careful in driving, especially when traversing roads in mountain barangays they are not familiar with.

CCTO spokesman Ronnie Nadera said a number of road mishaps in the mountain roads are due to the malfunctioning of vehicle brakes because of the road structure.

In September, around 12 persons were injured, including three foreigners, when a utility van they were on figured in a road accident at the Transcentral Highway in Balamban, Cebu. / JJL
