Everyone must not act complacent after hearing the state weather bureau say that Mawar, the international name for the super typhoon that recently battered United States territory Guam, will not make landfall in the Philippines.

Mawar becomes Betty when it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility, either on Friday night, May 26, 2023, or early Saturday, May 27.

But the typhoon’s name does not matter.

Regardless of the typhoon’s name, it is the country’s preparation for the weather disturbance that matters because the super typhoon could enhance the existing Habagat, bringing rain showers to most parts of the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Thursday, May 25.

Local government units must prepare for flooding and landslides, and must not dismiss Pagasa’s announcements and warnings.
