Cañizares, Pila rule 2019 Amo Cup

ROLANDO “Daga” Pila and Jose Mari Cañizares bagged the overall honors in the 12th Albino D. Gothong Memorial Golf Tournament-Amo Cup at the Cebu Country Club last Saturday, June 8, 2019.

Pila took home the lowest gross honors with two-under-par 70 strokes on nines of 36 and 34. He won the award after edging out Marc Gonzalez in the countback.

Cañizares, one of the popular architects of Cebu, claimed the lowest net plum with his 12-under-par 60 strokes effort off a gross score of 86.

Gonzalez took home the class A lowest gross plum while Andrew Cañete had the best net score of the premiere handicap class with 64. First runner-up was 13-year-old Jacob Victor Cajita with 65 and second runner-up was Gibson Balangauan with 66.

The lowest gross award for class B went to Calvin Gothong with six-over-par 78 strokes. The net champion for this group was Mar Selma with 66, winning it via the countback. First runner-up, also with 66 strokes, was Thomas Castillo and second runner-up, also with 66, was Gilfer Alvarez.

Ryuichi Yamamoto won the lowest gross award for class C with 85 strokes while lowest net was Abelardo “Billy” Tan, Sr. with 62.

First runner-up was Steve Maniquis with 64, edging out Stanley Chona in the countback. Chona settled for the second runner-up honors.

Jacinto Limyutian fired the lowest gross for class D with 94 strokes. The lowest net honors went to Kerwin Sytiongsa with 68, beating Eugene Rigodon in the countback.

Rigodon took the first runner-up honors while second runner-up was Philip Huang with 69.

The lowest gross for the seniors’ (55 years old and above) division went to Jack Huang, who fired four-over-par 76 strokes.

The lowest net award for the group went to Emmanuel Tesalona with 66 strokes while first runner-up via countback was Masahisa Kawakami with 68 and second runner-up was Dr. Lito Almendras.

In the ladies division, Mary Kim Hong bagged the lowest gross honors with 74 strokes.

Maricel Maniquis had the lowest net with 70 strokes edging Grace Quintanilla in the countback. Quintanilla took the first runner-up honors while second runner-up was Riko Nagai with 71.

Special prizes went to Andrew Cañete and Jacob Cajita for most birdies with five each; Marc Gonzalez for most pars with 14; lawyer Baldomero Estenzo for most bogeys with 13; and Norma Tio, Mayette Alba and Martin Ledesma for most double-bogeys with 11 apiece.

A total of 245 local players took part in the two-day golf tournament, which was held not only to commemorate the birth anniversary of the late Don Albino Gothong, but also to raise funds for the various charitable projects of the Alpa Foundation. (PR)
