UC Webmasters recover, rout CDO

THE University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters slammed the HMMED Enterprise/Cagayan de Oro City, 86-70, in the elimination round of the Mayor’s Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament 2019 at the Lope Asis Memorial Gymnasium in Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur on June 27, 2019.

The Mair Construction-backed Webmasters registered their first win in the tournament after losing to the ARQ Builders/Far Eastern University (FEU) 77-82 on Wednesday.

Tosh Sesay poured in 25 points for the UC, which improved to a 1-1 (win-loss) record, in the four-day pocket tournament joined by teams from Cebu, Manila and Cagayan do Oro.

UC went out with guns blazing early and carved out a 29-18 first quarter lead thanks to the torrid shooting of Tristan Albina, who knocked down three three-pointers in the opening quarter.

Albina finished with a total of 14 points while Luigi Gabisan also chipped in 14.

Gabisan had 13 of his 14 points in the second and third quarters when UC gained a 67-54 lead going to the final quarter.

UC will face the Madyaw Construction/Valenzuela Classic at 10 a.m. on June 28 before playing the Vincare Pharma/Southwestern University-Phinma (SWU) Cobras at 7 p.m. The Cobras, on the other hand, split their first two games, winning against Cagayan de Oro City, 71-66, before bowing to the Tamaraws, 72-87.

The Cobras were playing against the Valenzuela Classic at press time and will next face UC in their final elimination game on Friday at 7 p.m.

The top two teams in the elimination round will dispute the title in a knockout game, while the No. 3 and No. 4 teams will battle for third place. The champion will win P200,000, while the second to fifth placers will go home with P150,000, P100,000, P75,000 and P50,000, respectively. (RSC)
