Stronger South

Macky Lim

SOUTH Korea was never far from its neighboring Asean countries as it continues to bring the two “souths” (South Korea and Southeast Asian Nations) together, binding stronger ties creeping down to its roots through cultural appreciation of each nation.

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Asean-Korea dialogue relations and the 10th anniversary of the Asean-Korean Center (AKC) comes the birth of this year’s Asean Week launched last June 14, 2019, a showcase of the rich culture of Asean countries and South Korea’s pop and famous culture. It is a weeklong festivity at the heart of South Korea -- Seoul Plaza.

Performing groups from Brunei, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia with two pop singers from Korea perform before the crowd bannering the sights and sound of each country.

Kalumon Performing Ensemble from the Philippines proudly performed dances from the Bagobo tribe, Taosug tribe’s Pangalay, and fan dance of Maranao with kulitangan pieces.

The event was also graced by the ambassadors of respective countries during the opening ceremonies. The group also had a chance to meet Philippine Ambassador to South Korea Noe Wong together with the embassy attaches and staff.

The week-long festivity also had a fashion show showcasing the tapestry of countries, Asean travel talk, Asean café with gastronomical delight from Asean countries, tourism booth, and design exhibition all housed at Seoul Plaza.

Culture and arts speak the same language breaking the barrier between different nationalities. With the aim of uniting and forging ties between the South Korea and Asean Nations, the AKC bolsters the ties and creates positive change anchored with inclusive growth across the region.
