Zangrandi throughout the ages

Jennie P. Arado

THERE’S a special ice cream place in Surabaya that survived through the test of time. Already in the business since 1930, Zangrandi Ice Cream is loved and visited by generations after generations of ice cream lovers.

Zangrandi restaurant was founded by Italian Roberto Zangrandi and his family. The ice cream recipe was innovated by his wife known as Mevrouw Zangrandi. Their ice cream has been known to use natural ingredients and had been one of the pioneer ice creams in Surabaya. It started with four different flavor selections such as vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and mocha with three menu variants which were the Tutti Frutti, Macedonia, and Ice Cream Soda.

In 1960, the Zangrandi family decided to go back to their hometown and sold their restaurant and the well-loved ice cream recipe to a certain Adi Tanumulia, a winery entrepreneur. With his expertise in winery business, Tanumulia created more ice cream selections thus expanding the flavors to include coconut, raspberry, and durian. Even after several decades, the ice cream parlor continues to experiment and expand on their ice cream flavors and variants.

The ice cream shop, which is located in Yos Sudarso Avenue, Surabaya, is better known now as “Graha es krim Zangrandi” which translates to ice cream house of Zangrandi.

Their ice cream specialties now include Rocky Canyon, Sweet Blossom, Fruit Parade, Bali Dream, Winter Symphony, Classic Twinkle, Twins Glamour, and Nutty Monkey.

As they continue with their different flavors and ice cream varieties, they also now offer drinks with specialties like Rockin’ SatNite, Blue Island, Dazzling Night, Soda Ice Cream, Cocio Quake, Lovely Shake.

So the next time you find yourself in Surabaya, drop by Zangrandi Ice Cream and taste their ice cream that people of different nationalities and generations have come to love.
